The Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance of Canada (CDPAC) hosted a two-day conference on March 4-5, 2008. It offered a unique opportunity for Canadian and international experts to present the best available legal, scientific and social evidence on food marketing to children and its impact on obesity. Specifically, they examined the evidence both for and against increased regulation on food marketing to Canadian children. An objective panel of broad-based Canadians listened to arguments by key subject matter experts and then drafted a consensus policy statement outlining recommendations to governments, industry leaders, and other policy makers.
The conference, funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Government of British Columbia, was planned in response to the March 2007 release of the "Healthy Weights for Healthy Kids" report by the Standing Committee on Health which stated that childhood obesity has become an ‘epidemic’ in Canada.
